PAT Testing

PAT Testing has emerged as a major growth area for electrical contractors in recent times due to legal work and electrical requirements.

Lots of staff that don’t have electrical training, like maintenance staff and caretakers, are also being put forward by their employers to perform electrical safety testing.

Shocks from electrical installations or equipment could lead to falls from heights. Poorly installed or faulty appliances put staff in danger as they could cause fires and give electric shocks. Despite this the recommended PAT test methods and practises aren’t required by law they are simply methods of best practise.

The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, staff and self-employed persons to comply with the provisions of the regulations and take reasonably practicable steps to make sure that no danger comes from the use of such equipment. This therefore requires  the implementation of a systematic and regular program of maintenance, inspection and testing.

Training courses will teach you pat testing methods and ways to use PAT testing equipment. The result will be a pupil who can safely identify potential risks and test safely.  Specialist training in the testing of delicate IT equipment and appliances with mains filters would be required for some roles.

A PAT testing training course will consist of learning the legislation, hazard training, user checks, visual inspections, fuses, construction of the different class portable appliances, power tools and extension leads.

Electrical

Electrical first fix is a industry description and involves the standard carcassing where the wires are placed into position along the walls and between the middle of any timber flooring to the outlets, this is before any boarding has been fixed. Second Fix which happens after plastering is finished, involves the fixing of fittings, the joining together and fixing of light fittings, and the installation and testing of the boiler equipment in partnership with the plumber. all electrical contractors on the job will need to have the schematics of the building to be available well In advance so as to allow them to procure the necessary items.

To make sure that you get the most from your illumination be it lights for inside or external lighting you must look into the type of luminescent effect you require. An outside light could be a bright tungsten light that brightens if it senses movement or a low voltage light that allows the option of either being switched on and off or switches itself on from nightfall till sunrise and provides good visibility with less local disruption. Within a building the selection of flourescents, spot and standard bulb are huge, it is worth consulting your local electrical contractor to make sure that your present wiring can deal with more intense loading.

Have you looked at whether you need to get your house, bungalow, workshop rewired? Though you have been getting along with the fitting that is a drama to put a plug into or the wiring that keeps on getting caught whenever you go past it, it is only a matter of time before something fails or worse you are seriously injured. You can not be to cautious with powered equipment if you are in doubt about something be it external lighting or a power point in the home speak to the area electrical contractor and get them to look at it for you. To much caution is better for you than to have an accident.

Whenever the season is, it is preferable distinguishing what the needs are for external electricity. Most houses have external lighting, enabling them to see what they are doing in the dark or make the garden more a part of the day to day on lovely indian summer evenings, may consist of an industrial style crime prevention lighting or a individually ornate internally switched light. If you are more high tech and required an electrical greenhouse irrigation system it would be worth talking to your local electrical contractor to make sure you are installing the right cable outside and that it had the appropriate residual current circuit breaker.
